A Letter to My Sisters-in-Arms

We have suffered, my darlings. We have toiled and turned worry stones to dust with contemplation. We have relished victory and humbly accepted bitter defeat. We have been made to feel small, we have feared for our well-being and the futures of our loved ones. It seems like the crazy is boiling over lately; the general mood among my women friends  is less than serene. While I’m quite relieved to know I’m not the only one, at the same time, I can’t see it any other way but a call to action. We need a reminder, and that’s kind of what I’m all about.

We are strong. We are beautiful. We endure incredible hardship: emotional, financial, physical or spiritual. We do so with a grace that leaves witnesses breathless. We make mistakes, we dissolve into tears, we throw temper tantrums and careen from our pedestals. There is incredible beauty and grace in that fall, in admitting to ourselves and the people who love us that they can offer us something in return for our devotion to them.

We are all surrounded by family and friends that are proud to lift us up, and while this is an incredible blessing that stings my eyes and tightens my throat, I just have to point something out. We deserve that. Each of us and our own little circles, which cross over and blend and become stronger for all those interweaves, we have them because we are not only blessed but worthy. We are collectively and individually worthy of every bit of that support and encouragement.

Diamonds are made by putting plain old carbon under enough heat and pressure. The only natural diamonds are the result of violent movement in the Earth’s mantle. Not the crust, not where the flowers and trees grow, not where we spend our days and nights. No, the mantle is the hot, gooey layer underneath our daily existence. Where things bubble and melt and shift and erupt so intensely that they produce volcanoes and diamonds.

So please remember that the next time the ground shifts and you spew molten crazy the likes of which could destroy villages. Remember your beauty and grace. Take a damn swan dive off of your pedestal, in to the arms of the people you’ve inspired enough affection and devotion in that they consider themselves the lucky ones to catch you.

We are the product, not the process. The natural creation of diamonds is messy business, but the end result is something rare and valuable. Highly reflective, incredible tensile strength. A stone used to symbolize the strength of love and devotion. Isn’t that interesting.

Maybe that’s the real reason that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, because we stand for the same things. Love, light, devotion, strength, permanence and rare beauty.

After all, you are my sisters-in-arms, my best friends, and you are all diamonds. Every one.

Sometimes being the public persona for a big company is fun and slightly glamourous – other days…not so much when you encounter the rogue “hater”. You have no idea how much your words and support comforted me yesterday and today. Even though I don’t know you I hope to meet you one day soon! Coffee/Tea/Wine/Cocktail on me!

This is not the first time I’ve cried while reading your posts, wondering how you got inside my head. This is just what I needed, today.
Thank you.

P.S.: I’m using my real name to comment for the first time. This post deserves as much honesty as it gives.

powerful, inspiring & brilliantly written. it actually gave me goosebumps. althought this was written to a multitude of people, i felt as if you were speaking directly to me. your observations are so astute, so full of common sense, that i wonder why they are not immediately obvious to us everyday….the sad fact is that they aren’t always apparent. i’m glad that you put your thoughts into the forefront. this is the sort of “love letter” that we all need to print out & read to ourselves every single day. thank you. your wisdom is truly appreciated. : )

This post resonated throughout every cell, reverberated to the essential core. Powerful, brilliant images. A timely reminder for me as I waver in the face of inexorable pressures and the fine line between despair/hope, giving up/courageous perseverence. I will carry this with me. Thank you for your incisive wisdom and beautiful words.

YOU are a diamond, my dear.

“The natural creation of diamonds is messy business, but the end result is something rare and valuable. Highly reflective, incredible tensile strength. A stone used to symbolize the strength of love and devotion.”

I remember telling myself this over and over and over as I was processing the end of a really rough relationship – reminding myself that heat and pressure make for the most beautiful gems, and that I’d emerge a lustrous diamond out of the pressure of the ugly coals. Turns out, there’s something to that :)
