Magic Bean

There will come a time that will find you questioning everything you’ve ever known. Your heart will ache, your soul will be pink with the rawness of new scars. Someone or something will bring you to your knees in search for your identity, your place in the world, the cosmic logic in your personality and circumstances. This letter is for those times, and I smile while I write this because there is not the slightest sliver of doubt in my core that your Mama will make sure to have it ready for you.

None of us are born knowing where we belong in this world; we all must find purpose and love and fulfillment and happiness of our own effort. It seems cruel and harsh, but the struggle is what makes those things precious to us when we finally come upon them. That is your birthright as a human, and nothing anyone teaches you or shares with you will soothe that intensely personal ache except this: it is universal.

Perhaps it will comfort you in your darkest moments, though, to know a few things.

You are made from the best kind of love; soft and silken strength, quiet but fierce and unending. Both nature and nurture have given you gifts to share with the world. I cannot say whether it might be your mother’s infinite well of compassion, or your father’s love of truth and justice. No one but you knows if you will learn from her how to coax the best from everyone and everything she touches, or from him how to offer both tenderness and protection from the world’s hard edges- but all of these capacities are within you.

Already, you are a sign of hope, perseverance and redemption to the immediate world that anxiously awaits your arrival. I have known and loved your parents for some time now, and I cannot imagine a sweeter more perfect thing than the combination of those two beautiful old souls in new life. Whatever your individual path holds: your legacy is one of devoted love, and your mere existence is a miracle to those of us lucky enough to call your parents our dearest friends.

It is precisely your sweet mother’s ability to comfort me in my darkest places that inspires me to make some small attempt to do the same for you. The marking of our awe and wonder in your creation are things that she couldn’t have ever known about me in the manner that I know them about you. It is, though, the embodiment of what her love and compassion feel like to me. The highest expression of my gratitude is lovingly and joyfully passing it forward to you.

You are wanted. You are loved. You are magical now and forever, just by joining us in life. Whoever you are.

I can’t wait to find out.

ps: dude. lay off the morning sickness. i need to have lunch with your mom before my face explodes.  xoxo

Wonderful post, as always. Your writing style and your wit are enchanting. Reminds me of a quote:
“The supreme happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved.”
- Victor Hugo.

We rarely comment here, but always read, sweet friend.

Thank you for your support and friendship, qualities that our baby will know and understand about you and us, always.

Your excitement helps to calm me, and your unconditional love gives me strength.

We love you, Auntie Cat!
